Generative AI courses and concepts
Generative AI is artificial intelligence that produces new content — text, images, audio, video or code — by learning the patterns in a large body of training data and using them to assemble a plausible response to a prompt. The change it introduces is in the nature of the output: conventional software returns a result that is either correct or visibly broken, while a generated answer is only ever plausible. That makes judging the output part of the work rather than an optional extra, which is why learning the subject is really two skills — asking well, and telling when the answer is wrong.
The vocabulary of generative AI
This vocabulary is several different kinds of word wearing the same clothes: product names, model types and techniques. That matters because the products get discussed as if they were technologies — a sentence about one named assistant is usually a sentence about large language models in general, and occasionally it genuinely is not. The technique words are the durable half; they will still describe something real long after the product names have moved on.
Courses on generative AI
The choice worth making deliberately is between learning a particular tool and learning the technology underneath it. A course built around one assistant makes you useful this week and teaches you an interface; a course on the technology — how prompting works, how much a model can hold in mind at once, how to get your own material in front of one — is slower and still applies after your workplace switches tools.
