AI Fluency for Students is a free, short video course from Anthropic that takes its general framework for working well with AI and applies it squarely to student life. It's built on the four habits known as the 4D framework — Delegation (deciding what's yours to do and what AI can help with), Description (telling the AI clearly what you actually need), Discernment (judging whether what comes back is good, true, and yours to use), and Diligence (working honestly and within your institution's rules). The course puts those to work on real student tasks: planning and drafting written work without handing over your own thinking, preparing for exams, finding and checking sources for research, organizing a study schedule, and thinking ahead about applications and a career. The examples use Claude.ai because Anthropic makes the course, but the habits transfer to any chatbot. It assumes you already know the 4D framework: Anthropic recommends taking the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first, and so do we.

What you'll learn

  • How the 4D framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence — applies to studying and academic work
  • Using AI to plan and draft written work while keeping the thinking, and the words, genuinely your own
  • Preparing for exams and revising with AI as a study partner rather than a shortcut
  • Finding sources for research and checking what the AI tells you before you rely on it
  • Organizing study time, and using AI to think ahead about applications and career planning
  • Working within your school or university's rules on AI, and staying on the right side of academic honesty

Why we suggest this course

Free, short, and does something most "AI for students" material doesn't: it treats you as a learner with academic integrity to protect, not just someone looking for a faster way to finish an assignment. The payoff is a set of repeatable habits for the work you already do — essays, revision, research, planning — that keep your own thinking and voice at the center. Two things worth knowing: it builds on the four-part AI Fluency framework, so if those ideas are new, start with the foundational AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations and come back; and it's made by Anthropic, so the walkthroughs use Claude — but the habits work with whatever AI tool your course allows.
