AI Fluency for Small Businesses is a free video course from Anthropic for owners and operators who want to put AI to work in a small business while keeping their own judgment and their customers' trust. It applies the four habits of the 4D framework to running a business: Delegation (deciding which tasks to hand to AI and which to keep), Description (giving the AI enough context about your goals and constraints to be useful), Discernment (judging AI output critically before acting on it), and Diligence (handling customer data responsibly and setting an honest policy for how your team uses AI). It starts with a plain-language mental model of what today's AI can and can't do reliably, including why it sometimes makes things up and where its knowledge stops. It then moves to applying AI on everyday tasks across customer interactions, back-office work, and operations, and finishes by helping you build a repeatable AI-assisted workflow and a short AI use policy that fits your business. It was co-created with PayPal and two real small businesses — a Brooklyn butcher shop and an automotive power-module rebuilder — that appear throughout. Examples use Claude.ai because Anthropic makes the course, but the habits transfer to any chatbot. It builds on the framework rather than re-teaching it: Anthropic recommends the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first.
