AI Fluency for builders

AI Fluency for builders is a free course from Anthropic, made with the nonprofit CodePath, for product people, engineers, and makers who carry work from a customer problem to a shipped product. It applies the 4D framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence — to each step of that process. You begin by drafting a reusable brief that tells AI what you value, what limits you work within, and what it needs to know, then look at how large language models are made and the kinds of mistakes they make predictably. The course then covers splitting a problem between yourself and AI, writing acceptance tests that say what finished means before any code is written, and using a method it calls the Description Chain to turn a vague user need into an exact instruction. Later lessons cover reviewing AI-generated code through five lenses (correctness, quality, fit, experience, and responsibility), giving concrete, usable feedback on user experiences that AI has built, and choosing to ship, fix, or stop what you made. It runs about three hours across nine lessons and ends with a quiz that earns a completion badge. It lightly recaps the four Ds, but assumes you've met them before: Anthropic recommends the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first.
What you'll learn
- How the 4D framework applies to a builder's work, starting with a reusable brief that sets out your values, limits, and context for AI
- What large language models do well, and the mistakes they make predictably
- Splitting a customer problem across your toolkit and choosing where AI helps at each step
- Writing acceptance tests that say what finished means before code is written
- Turning a user need into an exact AI instruction with the Description Chain
- Reviewing AI-generated code for correctness, quality, fit, experience, and responsibility, and critiquing user experiences AI has built
- Owning what you ship, including when to stop it, fix it, or ship it
Frequently asked questions about AI Fluency for builders
Who is AI Fluency for builders for?
Product people, engineers, and makers who take work from a customer problem to a shipped product and want to use AI with clear judgment at each stage.
Is AI Fluency for builders free?
Yes — AI Fluency for builders is completely free to take.
What are the prerequisites for AI Fluency for builders?
The course lightly recaps the 4D AI Fluency framework but is designed to build on it, not teach it from scratch. Anthropic recommends completing AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations first — start there if the four Ds are new to you. It also helps to have an AI tool to practice with; the examples use Claude.ai, but Anthropic says any AI tool will work.
Why we suggest this course
Worth taking if you build software or products and want a method for deciding where AI belongs in that work, rather than a tour of tools. The most practical parts are writing acceptance tests before any code is generated, and judging AI output on more than whether it runs. The course is based on research into what engineers and product builders need from AI. One thing to know: the examples use Claude.ai, but Anthropic says any AI tool will work for the hands-on practice.
