AI Fluency for Educators

AI Fluency for Educators is a free, short video course from Anthropic for teachers and faculty who want to bring AI into their own teaching work. It takes Anthropic's general method for working well with AI — the four habits known as the 4D framework — and aims them at the daily craft of teaching: Delegation (deciding which parts of course design and prep are yours and which AI can help carry), Description (telling the AI clearly what a lesson, rubric, or activity actually needs to do), Discernment (judging whether what comes back is accurate, fair, and fit for your students), and Diligence (using AI openly and responsibly, and modeling that for the people you teach). The course works through real instructional tasks — designing a course, building coherent learning materials like slides and study guides, and developing assessments that genuinely test understanding — with AI as a thinking partner rather than an autopilot. It was made with two professors, Rick Dakan of Ringling College of Art and Design and Joseph Feller of University College Cork. The walkthroughs use Claude.ai because Anthropic makes the course, but the habits carry over to any chatbot. It lightly recaps the four Ds, but assumes you've met them before: Anthropic recommends the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first.
What you'll learn
- How the 4D framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence — applies to the work of teaching
- Using AI as a thinking partner in course and lesson design rather than letting it set the agenda
- Building coherent learning materials — slides, study guides, activities — that hold together pedagogically
- Designing assessments that genuinely measure understanding in a world where students have AI too
- Modeling open, responsible AI use for your students through your own practice
Frequently asked questions about AI Fluency for Educators
Who is AI Fluency for Educators for?
Teachers, faculty, instructional designers, and education leaders who want to apply AI thoughtfully to their own teaching work — course design, learning materials, and assessment.

Yes — AI Fluency for Educators is completely free to take.
What are the prerequisites for AI Fluency for Educators?
No coding or technical background required. The course lightly recaps the 4D AI Fluency framework but is designed to build on it, not teach it from scratch. Yes. Free certificate of completion.
Why we suggest this course
Free, short, and focused on the teacher's side of the desk: it's about strengthening how you design and assess learning with AI, not about handing students a tool and hoping for the best. The payoff is a repeatable way to approach the prep work you already do — building a course, writing materials, designing assessments that resist a copy-paste answer — with your professional judgment kept firmly in charge. Two things worth knowing: it builds on the four-part AI Fluency framework and only lightly recaps it, so if those ideas are new, start with the foundational AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations; and it's made by Anthropic, so the examples use Claude — but the habits work with whatever AI tool your institution allows.
