Teaching AI Fluency

Last updated June 19, 2026
Teaching AI Fluency is a free, short video course from Anthropic for educators who want to teach the AI Fluency framework to others — students, colleagues, or staff — rather than just use it themselves. This is the part of the family aimed at the instructor's role: how to introduce the four habits of the 4D framework (Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence) in a classroom or workshop, scaffold them so learners build the skills gradually, and design assignments and assessments that develop and measure AI fluency alongside the actual subject being taught. It also looks at the wider question of integrating AI responsibly into a discipline's teaching, assessment, and curriculum. It was developed with professors Rick Dakan of Ringling College of Art and Design and Joseph Feller of University College Cork, drawing on their experience training other educators. The examples use Claude.ai because Anthropic makes the course, though the approach applies to any chatbot. It builds on the framework rather than re-teaching it: Anthropic recommends the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first.

- Designing assignments and assessments that develop and measure AI fluency alongside subject mastery
- Integrating AI responsibly into a discipline's pedagogy, assessment, and curriculum
- Building institutional capacity for meaningful, honest AI use across courses
Frequently asked questions about Teaching AI Fluency
Who is Teaching AI Fluency for?
Faculty, instructional designers, and trainers who want to teach the AI Fluency framework to their own students or staff — and assess it — rather than apply it to their personal work.
Is Teaching AI Fluency free?
Yes — Teaching AI Fluency is completely free to take.
What are the prerequisites for Teaching AI Fluency?
No coding or technical background required. Because this course is about teaching the 4D AI Fluency framework, it assumes you already understand it. Anthropic recommends — but does not require — completing AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations first; start there if the four Ds are new to you. It helps to have teaching or curriculum responsibilities and access to any AI chat tool to practice with.
Does Teaching AI Fluency offer a certificate?
Yes. Free certificate of completion, after a short quiz.
Why we suggest this course
Free, short, and genuinely different from the other AI Fluency courses: this one is about teaching the framework to your own students or staff, not applying it to your personal workload. If you're a faculty member, instructional designer, or trainer who needs to bring a roomful of people up to speed — and assess whether they actually got there — this is the sibling built for that job. The payoff is concrete teaching moves: how to scaffold the four habits, and how to design assignments and assessments that build AI fluency without losing sight of the subject itself. Two things worth knowing: it assumes you already understand the 4D framework you'll be teaching, so start with the foundational AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations if it's new to you; and it's made by Anthropic, so the examples use Claude — though the teaching approach carries over to any AI tool.
