AI Fluency for creative work is a free course from Anthropic for people who make creative work, including writers, illustrators, designers, and musicians. It was developed with Professor Rick Dakan of Ringling College of Art and Design and Professor Joseph Feller of University College Cork, the two creators of the AI Fluency Framework. The course starts from the option of using no AI, and gives you two tools for judging whether AI has a place in your practice and, if so, where and how. The Creative Value Lens names three kinds of value creative work offers: creative expression, human connection, and distinctiveness. The Production Lens splits the cost of making work into time, effort, and resources, and looks at how technology shifts those costs. You then put your own practice into words and turn that into standards for judging work, apply the Delegation and Diligence competencies to a real project, and learn five outcomes a delegation decision tends to reach: No AI, Consultant, Tool Builder, Co-Creator, and Medium. A worked example takes one illustrator through the full process. The course runs about five hours across eight lessons and ends with a quiz that earns a completion badge. It lightly recaps the framework's four Ds (Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence), but assumes you've met them before: Anthropic recommends the foundational course, AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, first.

What you'll learn

  • Taking no AI as the starting point, then judging if, where, and how AI fits your practice
  • The Creative Value Lens: creative expression, human connection, and distinctiveness
  • The Production Lens: time, effort, and resources, and how technology changes them
  • The four AI Fluency competencies and how they form two connected loops
  • Putting your own practice into words — your work, your process, and your working habits — and setting standards to judge work against
  • Applying Delegation and Diligence to a real project, including knowing when not to delegate
  • The five delegation outcomes: No AI, Consultant, Tool Builder, Co-Creator, and Medium

Frequently asked questions about AI Fluency for creative work

Who is AI Fluency for creative work for?

Creative professionals — writers, illustrators, designers, musicians, and others — who want to make deliberate decisions about AI in their practice while keeping their work their own.

Is AI Fluency for creative work free?

Yes — AI Fluency for creative work is completely free to take.

What are the prerequisites for AI Fluency for creative work?

The course lightly recaps the 4D AI Fluency framework but is designed to build on it, not teach it from scratch. Anthropic recommends completing AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations first — start there if the four Ds are new to you. It also helps to have an AI tool to practice with; the examples use Claude.ai, but Anthropic says any AI tool will work.

Why we suggest this course

Worth taking if you make creative work and want a structured way to decide where AI fits, including the option of not using it. The course is built around analysis rather than tool features, and treats authorship and your relationship with your audience as the central questions. The five delegation outcomes fall into two groups, split by one test: whether any AI-generated material ends up in the finished work your audience sees. One thing to know: the examples use Claude.ai, but Anthropic says any AI tool will work for the hands-on practice.
