It builds a plain mental model from four ideas: that a language model generates text by predicting the next piece one step at a time; that its "knowledge" is baked in from training and is the reason it can sometimes state wrong things with total confidence; that it has a limited working memory, so what you've put in front of it shapes what it can do; and that it can be steered, within limits, by how you set the task up. Tie those together and an odd or wrong answer stops being mysterious — you can tell which kind of failure you're looking at and respond to it directly instead of guessing.
