AI Fluency for pK–12 educators is a free course from Anthropic, made with Teach For America, for teachers and school staff working from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. It applies the 4D framework — Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence — to everyday school tasks, and draws on Teach For America's own work building AI fluency with educators across the United States. You start by writing a reusable document about your role, your students, and your goals, so later AI conversations begin with the right background. A lesson on how AI works includes an interactive next-token simulator and covers limits such as hallucinations, where a model states something false with confidence, and knowledge cutoffs. The course then uses the Description and Discernment competencies to produce and check differentiated teaching materials, and the Delegation and Diligence competencies to keep student data safe and think through ethical gray areas. You draft personal ethical commitments and a statement of your AI values, then apply the whole framework to a task taken from your own job. It runs about three hours across ten lessons and ends with a quiz that earns a completion badge. It lightly recaps the four Ds; for deeper background, Anthropic suggests two courses first: AI Fluency: Framework & Foundations, and AI Capabilities and Limitations.

Why we suggest this course
Worth taking if you teach or work in a school and want AI training written for that setting rather than for college teaching. It is built around conditions schools face — limited resources, accountability to many stakeholders, and the duty to protect student data — and it ends with you applying the framework to a real piece of your own work rather than a hypothetical one. One thing to know: the examples use Claude.ai, but Anthropic says any AI tool will work for the hands-on practice.
